Infection control system could save hospitals thousands of pounds

Sira-Care DiffX: disinfection and infection control

HOSPITAL and healthcare providers looking to save money while dramatically improving infection control in their setting can do both with a revolutionary new disinfection system.

Sira-Care DiffX could save hospitals or trusts hundreds of thousands of pounds, even millions, in the course of a year when used as part of a cleaning/infection control regime.

Sira-Care DiffX eliminates all surface contamination 100% and has the potential to not only revolutionise global infection control but also contribute significant financial savings. It is already used by an ever-growing number of NHS hospitals in the UK.

“When used as part of a cleaning regime it both cleans and disinfects at the same time, so there is a clear time saving,” said Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, “but it can also save money by keeping wards clean, disinfected and infection free, reducing lost bed days, the cost of decontamination, cost of antibiotics and treatments, staff sickness and agency staff.

“As it is non-corrosive it also maximises equipment use – again, leading to financial savings.”

One hospital trust in the south of England saved £150,000 during a 20-week trial in just four wards. An eight-week trial, quickly extended to 20, began in two wards at the start of November – a time when wards will traditionally come under increasing pressure as winter kicks in. The wards had experienced high infection rates the previous year.

In Ward A the amount of bed days lost fell from 353 to 177, and in Ward B fell from 36 to 0. With each lost bed day costing the trust £400, the savings quickly became significant. With each patient who picks up an infection such as MRSA or C diff in hospital costing the trust a further £4,250, the actual savings were even higher - £108,000 was the minimum saved.

The trial was then extended to two further wards, where additional savings were made.

Simon Balderson added: “The savings didn’t stop there. Instead of using a chlorine disinfectant, general purpose cleaner and wipes, at a cost of £97,000 per year, the cost of using Sira-Care DiffX was less than half – a saving of £21,714 over a 20-week period.

“So in just four wards, in 20 weeks, the trust in question saved £149,314. This would equate to £388,217 in a year, and of course most hospitals have more than four wards…

“And Sira-Care DiffX is non-corrosive. From the humble mop, which will last longer before it needs replacing, right through to the more expensive items such as a mortuary table at around £20,000 a piece, and even the fabric of the building, there are savings everywhere.”

Sira-Care DiffX truly represents a new generation of infection control. It is non-chlorine-based, non-corrosive, cleans and disinfects at the same time, and eliminates all surface contamination – including MRSA and viruses, C Diff spores, Norovirus, TB and Mycobacteria.

Organisations already using Sira-Care DiffX include: Tameside Hospital; the BUPA Cromwell Hospital; the Royal London Hospital for Integrated Medicine; Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals; the Eastman Dental Institute, and University College London Hospitals.

Jonathan Mason, Sirane business development manager, said: “Sira-Care DiffX is very simple to use. The soluble sachets are simply dissolved in warm water – and the disinfectant becomes active. Once made up the solution can be used for up to 24 hours.

“At the moment, Sira-Care DiffX is available in sachets and with a trigger spray bottle, but the next stage of our development work is to introduce a range of disinfectant wipes.

“Sira-Care DiffX will be marketed initially at hospitals, health centres and care homes, but the potential scope for the product is vast – as possible markets include anywhere that is regularly cleaned. Schools, shopping centres, airports, even businesses could benefit…”

Sirane is a highly innovative product development-to-manufacture company based in Telford, Shropshire. It has four divisions: food packaging; medical and healthcare; industrial and horticultural. The company can supply anywhere across the world.

The company is exhibiting at two regional infection control conferences next month: Infection Today 2015 on October 7th in the Midlands; and the North Wales Infection Prevention Autumn Conference 2015 at the Venue Cymru, Llandudno, on October 15th. Sirane is also exhibiting at Pharma Expo, Las Vegas, from September 28th-30th.

Sirane is also interested to hear from any potential distributors overseas, Sira-Care DiffX being just one of a number of medical products that could have global sales. Other products include BenchGuard Advanced, Safe-hold absorbent pads and pouches for diagnostic specimen transportation, Cellosene wadding, disposable absorbent non-slip theatre mats, absorbent tourniquet drapes, 95 kPa bags and dental extraction packs.

Final preparations under-way for Pharma Expo in Las Vegas

FINAL arrangements are underway for Sirane Medical and Healthcare’s first Trans-Atlantic trade show as we head to the popular Pharma Expo in Las Vegas.

We’ll be taking a range of medical and healthcare products, including absorbent products, specimen transportation, surface protection and some infection control solutions.

Pharma Expo is co-hosted at Pack Expo, one of North America’s largest trade shows. Pack Expo is being held in Las Vegas, Nevada, from September 28-30. Pharma Expo would be a sizeable show in its own right – 2014 saw 262 exhibitors over 60,000 sq ft.

Adam Green, president, Sirane North America, said: “We’re putting the final touches to plans for Pharma Expo and it could prove to be a very exciting time for Sirane North America.

“Sirane’s expertise in areas such as absorbency and material science means that we have some very interesting and innovative products to offer to the North American market.

“Pharma Expo and Pack Expo is a terrific show, and a great place for us to show off our medical and healthcare range for the first time in the United States. Products such as Sira-Care DiffX and BenchGuard® Advanced should provoke a lot of interest.”

BenchGuard® Advanced will be a particular focus for Sirane at Pharma Expo. It offers the ultimate bench protection for laboratories, hospitals, surgeries and other clinical environments where high absorbency and sterile surface protection is required

Jonathan Mason, Sirane’s business development manager, said: “BenchGuard® Advanced is an absorbent, impermeable faced cellulosic fabric suitable for protection of laboratory benches and similar surfaces from spillage. It should prove very popular in the US.”

BenchGuard® Advanced is strong and tear resistant even when wet and its flat smooth surface can be written on with pencil or ink. Used BenchGuard® Advanced can be readily disposed of after use and its clean composition means that it is suitable for incineration.

BenchGuard® Advanced is available in pre-cut sheets of various sizes and also in reel/roll format. It is also available with adhesive strips, preventing movement on the work bench.

Other products which will be on show at Pharma Expo include disposable absorbent non-slip theatre mats (OR mats), specimen transportation solutions including bags, pads and multi-bay pouches, 95 kPa bags, and active pouches for disabling potentially harmful drugs.

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, will be on the booth. He said: “North America is a vast market, and we have some great products which make use of our areas of expertise. Absorbent non-slip OR mats, for example, are relevant to any operating room anywhere in the world.

“In simple terms, they keep both patient and surgeon safe by preventing slips.

“We also have our dental products, saliva absorbers, extraction packs etc, which we have developed in conjunction with the dental trade, and which have global appeal.”

There will also be the opportunity to discuss Sira-Care DiffX, a revolutionary new disinfection system and infection control product for hospitals and healthcare providers which both cleans and disinfects at the same time, and eliminates all surface contamination 100%. It is already used by an ever-growing number of NHS hospitals in the UK.

Infection control on the agenda for Sirane in the autumn

INFECTION control will be the autumn focus for Sirane Medical & Healthcare as we head to two regional UK conferences where we will be exhibiting our product range.

Sirane will have a stand at Infection Today 2015 in Birmingham on Wednesday, October 7th, and then the following week at the North Wales Infection Prevention Autumn Conference 2015 at the Venue Cymru in Llandudno on Thursday, October 15th.

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “Sirane’s expertise in areas such as absorbency and material science means that we have some very exciting and innovative products to offer to the medical and healthcare market, with a real focus on our infection control products.

“One such product is our Sira-Care DiffX – a new disinfection system which both cleans and disinfects at the same time. The product offers great infection control outcomes.

“Sira-Care DiffX eliminates all surface contamination 100% and has the potential to not only revolutionise global infection control but also contribute significant financial savings. It is already used by an ever-growing number of NHS hospitals in the UK.”

Data from trusts who have used the product has demonstrated significant cost savings.

“When used as part of a cleaning regime it both cleans and disinfects at the same time, so there is a clear time saving,” said Simon Balderson, “but it can also save money by keeping wards clean, disinfected and infection free, reducing lost bed days, the cost of decontamination, cost of antibiotics and treatments, staff sickness and agency staff.

“As it is non-corrosive it also maximises equipment use – again, leading to financial savings.”

An exciting addition to Sirane’s already popular Sira-Care range, the company is already working on providing the product in new formats to complement the existing range – the first of which we intend to be a pack of Sira-Care DiffX handy wipes.

BenchGuard® Advanced offers the ultimate bench protection for laboratories, hospitals, surgeries and other clinical environments where high absorbency and sterile surface protection is required. It has a highly absorbent surface and an effective liquid barrier layer to ensure that spillages are contained and protect the work top.

Reduce costs and improve infection control with one disinfection product

HOSPITAL and healthcare providers looking to save money and improve infection control at the same time can do so by using a powerful new disinfection system.

Sira-Care DiffX eliminates all surface contamination 100% and has the potential to not only revolutionise global infection control but also contribute significant financial savings. “As it is non-corrosive it also maximises equipment use – again, leading to financial savings. Feedback from trusts who have shared data suggests these savings are very significant.

“This incredible disinfection system will be appreciated by everyone; patients, cleaning staff, the director of infection control, and the person who controls the hospital’s budget.”
